MASTER OF KUNG FU #90-91 (1980)

Shang Chi is in New York, and it’s 1980, so I guess it was inevitable that Chi would get involved with Chinatown gangs.

During this period, Marvel would make an effort to show gangs as interracial whenever they appeared in comics. It was dopey. Gangs are almost never interracial. In fact, having grown up in NYC during this period, I can say first hand that gangs were often specifically formed on the basis of race. I’m not saying they were all black or anything like that. There were plenty of white gangs, in white neighborhoods. I’m just saying the interracial portrayals were silly.

Anyway, since this takes place in Chinatown, they don’t have to worry about that.

After Chi beats the gang up, they nominate him as leader.

He accepts, trying to broker a peace treaty between warring gangs, and ends up arrested.

The story wraps up too quickly–Chi gets out, and humiliates the gang leaders into a peace. It’s a dumb ending to a story that started strong and should have gone on longer.
