Thor #607-610 (2010): Siege; Ragnarok dies

Since Siege is about a siege of Asgard, led by Norman Osborn, you’d think these issues of Thor would be pretty essential reading.  I guess they are.  Kinda.

The issues show the siege from the Asgardians’ perspective, so if you’re looking for that, here it is.  For me, the interesting part focuses on the clone of Thor who calls himself Ragnarok.

He believes he is the real Thor, but calls himself by the name of a prophecy around the destruction of Asgard. What a nutbag.

Volstagg the Voluminous recently turned himself into the local authorities for (seemingly, due to Loki’s intervention) having caused massive fatalities in Chicago, and Ragnarok arrives to judge him for submitting to mortal law.  Their battle is not depicted in the main Siege series.

What IS depicted there is real-Thor’s fight against Sentry, which leads to the entire floating city of Asgard to come crashing down…

…Right down on Volstagg and Ragnarok.  I love that.  It’s one of the best tie-ins to an event ever.

The entire Siege story happens in the background, but it’s so light on plot that you actually can read these issues and not miss a damn thing.

These issues also reveal that Loki regrets having engineered the siege of Asgard because he wanted to rule the kingdom, not destroy it.  After Sentry and Osborn are dispatched, Balder exiles Loki from Asgard for his role in the event, and removes the sentence of exile that had been placed on Thor.

Also after the events of Siege are over, Ragnarok and Volstag emerge from the rubble, and Thor is finally able to destroy the clone.

Finally.  That dude was annoying AF.
