Marvel Fanfare #44 (1989): Dr. Doom

Al Milgrom had a cartoon feature about his work as editor on the inside front cover of every issue of Fanfare.  This one has him sleeping past deadline.  I know he didn’t mean it this way, but it suggests that Marvel is just phoning this book in—burning off inventory in a direct-market, glossy-paper, extra-pricey comic.

Which, of course, is exactly what they’re doing.

Ironically, though, this is one of the better issues of Fanfare.  Ken Steacy is a highly stylized painter, so your results may vary, but the story features an unconscious Tony due to gas in a trap/trick torpedo, inside his armor that gets hit by a strange new virus.  This means Ant-Man has to go inside his armor to free him.  Then, Tony and James Rhodes ask Doctor Doom for help figuring out the source of the virus when Doom, too, succumbs to the “armor virus.”
