THE ORIGINAL DEFENDERS BY MICHAEL GOLDEN

  1. All hail the original ( REAL ) Defenders! The mightiest force for good Planet Earth has ever seen! The Sub-Mariner looks like a million bucks here in his nifty mid-Seventies disco suit! I was disappointed when it was written out, for some dumbass reason, in ‘Super-Villain Team-Up#5, in early 1976, and also disappointed when the Silver Surfer was freed from his Earthly confines in the premiere issue of his second series in 1987. Why was this necessary, heavens to Galactus?? The Silver Surfer works best- MUCH best- in relation to the Human Race, not out surfing the cosmos with the Kree, and the Skrulls, and the Klingons, and the Cotati, and the Romulans, and shit. His Earthly confinement was where his element of tragedy came from, a staple of the Marvel Brand. He hasn’t known any tragedy since escaping the Earth, which has left him severely weakened as a character. You would think after thirty-five years, Marvel would have figured this out. Adding the Son of Satan to this unparalleled assemblage of power would truly restore the Dynamic Defenders to their early Seventies position as Marvel’s showcase series! Word up!
