CAPTAIN AMERICA #163-167 (1973): 1st Nightshade; Serpent Squad

Lots of scary stuff in these issues, which start with snakes.

The formation of the first Serpent Squad, which will eventually merge into the Serpent Society. It includes Cobra, Ee, and a new character, Viper.

But it’s not just snakes.

falcon vs werewolf

There’s werewolves (and Falcon becomes one), giant tarantulas and scorpions, and even mummies…

captain america and falcon fight living mummies

This is the story that marks the first appearance of Nightshade, who is a Werewolf wrangler hired by Yellow Claw to fight Captain America and The Falcon.

Yellow Claw has his own version of Igor…

…Except Igor is a brilliant scientist who can animate the dead (kind of). It’s really not worth explaining.

Nightshade is characterized as a stand-in for civil rights issues

Marvel was really into monster stories in the early 1970s, with a whole line of books about vampires and werewolves and stuff.

On the one hand, this is a fun story but…It’s not played for fun so it falls a bit flat.
