Rob Liefeld has done a lot of great things. This is not one of them. Like many others, I was excited to see Shatterstar get his own series….Not. The Mojoverse is rarely all that interesting and thus far Shatterstar has never made sense. The fact that he’s the son of Dazzler and Longshot could have been something to explore but…That doesn’t happen here. Instead, we get introduced to a character who I assume is Donald Pierce’s son (but he’s never seen again), travel to yet-another future featuring yet-another Cable, huge muscles and guns and assorted weapons, lots of flashbacks to Rob Liefeld’s old X-Force stories and confusion confusion confusion. It ends with Shatterstar trying to find some holy temple or some nonsense like that.
Liefeld was only responsible for the plot here. The execution through script and the art (which seems to be attempting to imitated Rob’s distinctive style) are weak but not his fault.
Note: The trade version of this mini reprints some old New Mutants stories about Shatterstar, created by Liefeld, and they are much better than the new material here.
