AVENGERS #239 (1984): Letterman

Cover tribute!

This is the one with David Letterman.  For Assistant Editors’ Month.  Even if it’s not the “real” team–it’s a bunch of guys who really aren’t on the team anymore.

And to make it even better, Fabian Stankowicz shows up with a bunch of evil robots to ruin it.

Dave decks him.

Also, Paul Shaeffer cosplays as Cap.  Sort of. Enough for me to include by celebrity cosplay tag.

The reason for the show appearance was to help Wonder Man promote his movie career, but…

It never airs.

The issue’s not just jokes.  Beast reveals his new role with The New Defenders to his teammates when Dave interviews them on the show.

And, on the splash page, Hawkeye reveals to everyone that he married Mockingbird by carrying her across the threshold to Avengers Mansion.

It’s a little awkward with Natasha.

But they just tell the teammates–they decide not to come out about it on the show.

And finally, Beast officially quits the team in this issue.

Much celebrated, much loved.  Roger Stern was one of the best Marvel writers of all time.

  1. So, David Letterman clobbers Fabian Stankowicz with a giant doorknob on his show here, does he-?? Too bad he couldn’t exhibit the same level of courage when he had on actor Richard Belzer and some pro wrestler ( whose exact name I forget ) and when Belzer insinuated to the wrestler that professional wrestling is staged, the wrestler knocked Belzer out of his chair into the floor, nearly knocking him out, while Letterman just sat in his chair and watched the whole thing! Letterman could have at LEAST called for security! That was the night I stopped being a Letterman fan, and watching his show!
