FANTASTIC FOUR #134-135 (1973)

Ostensibly, these were two issues about Gideon and Dragon Man, but the story (a) doesn’t make a lot of sense; and (b) is boring.

Gerry Conway is, in my opinion, one of the worst Fantastic Four writers of the 1970s.  These issues are great examples of why.

Even the jokes are lame.

Anyway, Franklin is still weird and Alicia is still missing Ben.  Sue and Franklin get taken by Dragon Man.

All the women in the FF comics seem to do is either get kidnapped or miss their men.  Or both.  Except for Medusa, who is a boss.

  1. Yes, Sue Storm returns to her so famous hostage role in issue #134, when Dragon Man captures her and Franklin for Gideon. Mr. Fantastic, you should have dumped Sue Storm and permanently replaced her with lovely and confident Medusa, “a boss”!

  2. The Thing’s comment likening his Aunt Petunia’s “mug” to that of the Dragon Man is incongruous with the revelation to come in another 105 issues during the Byrne run where we discover that Mrs. Doctor Petunia Grimm is quite young, and extremely attractive. Somebody was a little asleep at the continuity switch, there. I’m not sure which version of Aunt Petunia I prefer- the young, svelte, sexy version, or the classic perception of her as an old battle-ax, which sort-of makes more sense. But it always seemed odd to me that if Aunt Petunia really were as professionally accomplished as Byrne painted her out to be during his run, then she and her husband would have wanted to come and visit their world-famous nephew, and his lifelong friend Reed Richards- the most intelligent man on Earth- ( officially-unofficially, it’s Doctor Doom, creator of the time machine, and who quite casually not only cured the Sub-Mariner of his life-threatening condition, but also very casually and with no effort at all, revived the Sub-Mariner’s comatose countrymen ) a hell of a lot sooner than they actually did!! Right??!! But, anyway, back to 1973, and ‘FF’#134- Dorrie Evans, 1973- hilarious!!! Poor John-Bo!!
