Captain America #312 (1985): 1st Flag Smasher

This is the first appearance of Flag-Smasher, an anti-Nationalist of the worst—not best—kind.

His fear is fascism, but he’s ready to throw out the baby with the bathwater by killing hundreds of people, randomly, in order to get his words televised.

Honestly, this feels like an early 1970s issue of Cap.  It’s not bad, but the series has kind of moved past sledgehammer symbolism and massive speeches, and regressing to that feels out of place.  (Despite what Cap thinks to himself in the panel above, this will not be the last time he makes a public statement.)

The plotline of Serpent Society tracking down MODOK to kill him is moved forward, briefly, but no MODOK appearance.

More Bernie too.

I love how cute and lighthearted the Steve-and-Bernie segments are. I also just noticed that the two most playfully romantic long-lasting relationships in comics are both with a hero and a redhead.
