X-Factor #41-42 (1989): 1st Alchemy

This issue introduces Alchemy, a nerd who can change the elements that make up any object—organic or inorganic.

He has to be a nerd because his power depends on his understanding the molecules he is transmuting.

Some trolls kidnap him because they want him to make gold for him.  Seriously.  Yeah, it’s played for laughs.

His mom calls X-Factor for help, and they save him.

They offer to enroll him in their “school” (which basically is just a place where they learn/apply learning about fighting).  He declines.

Meanwhile, Baby Cable is now being carted around to adventures.

It’s not a bad story, and it’s drawn by the great Art Adams.

And speaking of trolling, in the days before internet, Marvel used its letter page to get people to vote for their books in the Comic Buyer’s Guide fan awards.
