Daredevil vs Punisher #1-5 (2005)

Hammerhead and Jackal try to occupy the space left when Kingpin went to jail.  Both Daredevil and Punisher want to prevent them from consolidating power, but obviously their tactics differ and they end up fighting each other instead of the bad guys until they work their stuff out and team-up.

That part is fairly by-the-numbers.  The cool parts include Jackal offering $10 million to Bushwacker for killing Punisher and some cool prison scenes after the criminals are arrested…

That’s Hammerhead giving a flushie to his cellmate.  And the story ends with Punisher in prison…

We’ll see if that ever ends up working its way into Punisher continuity.

A solid creator turns in mediocre work here.  This should have been a natural for David Lapham, creator of Stray Bullets, but he appears to have done no research on the characters.  As a result, it’s not a bad comic, it’s just not a great as a DAREDEVIL/PUNISHER comic. Lapham’s art is often good but also uneven, and borrows heavily from predecessors like Frank Miller. This one is certainly similar…

…but it’s sloppy. Points for having the fight happen at a water tower, though.

This one is even closer to Miller’s work.

I mean, you could do worse than borrowing from one of the best DD/Punisher fights in history and one of the all-time greatest Daredevil comics.

Add that to dialogue that feels uncharacteristic for these heroes, both Punisher…

…And Daredevil…

…And you’ve got a below-average book.
