BULLPEN BULLETINS: FEBRUARY and MARCH 1982 (1982)

Jim Shooter gives some space to his editors.  In the days before there were a lot of comic-cons, this was sometimes the only way you could feel connected to the publisher’s creators.  Shooter, emulating Stan Lee, brought back Bullpen Bulletins because he recognized the value of brand loyalty—something that had fallen away during the few years before Shooter became the leader of Marvel.  It’s also why he emphasized that Marvel was paying creators better in the following month…

Whether the column was true or not, Shooter knew that there was a monetary value in having a strong connection to the fan base, and around this time, DC was getting into all kinds of battles with the Schuster family over the rights to Superman.

I know a lot of people say he was unnecessarily tyrannical, but Shooter knew how to run Marvel.
