Union Jack #1-4 (2006-2007)

An AIM faction called RAID blows a bunch of stuff up in England. They’re trying to supplant HYDRA as the world’s leading terrorist group.

MI5 pulls in Union Jack to lead a strike team: Arabian Knight, Sabra, and Contessa Allegra Valentina de Fontaine. Side note that doesn’t matter all that much: I’m not sure why Joey Chapman would lead this group. Sabra has been around for a long time and has fought alongside the X-Men. Contessa has even more experience, and even led the SHIELD “Femme Force.” She also actually took down Hydra a few times so she has practical experience against terrorist organizations. She even points out, at one point, that she was the Deputy Director of SHIELD…

She does have a nice rack, in fact.

As for Arabian Knight, this is (yet another) version of that character. Since he’s new, I can see it being a toss-up between him and Union Jack in terms of qualifications.

Note that this version of the Knight is from Palestine. Putting him on a team with Israel’s Sabra is a fairly ingenious character casting.

British intelligence knows who RAID has hired to commit their attacks…

Look at them! There’s Ecstasy from the Cloak and Dagger series of the early ’90s! And Jackhammer from Captain America’s wrestling days! And that’s only a partial list! It doesn’t include Batroc the Leaper, a Dreadnought, or several others. It’s a who’s who of C- and D-list villains. That happens to be my favorite kind of attack squad!

The miniseries from there is just Jack and his team fighting lame villains.

It’s an action movie at notable locations like Parlaiment and the Tower Bridge.

The fight scenes are not just punchy punching. They’re also smart and well-written. Like when U.J. takes on Bombshell of the Death Throws gang…

Controller has a role, so we also get to see Union Jack fighting his mind-controlled partners.

He does pretty well against them.

It ends with Union Jack exposing a traitor in the British government and saving the day.

Solid miniseries. Fun read, especially because of the large cast.
