Colossus: Bloodline #1-5 (2005-2006)

Colossus doesn’t get a lot of attention, so a solo story is welcome. Plus, he just got resurrected in the pages of Astonishing X-Men so the timing is good.

Someone is wiping out his bloodline, so he goes to Russia to find out who and why. The answer? Mister Sinister made a deal with Peter’s great-grandfather Grigori Rasputin, that enabled the man to father a bloodline of powerful mutants.

Rasputin is, of course, loosely based on the character from Russian folklore–but he also appeared in pre-616 Universe stories published in Strange Tales, and was also one of the resurrected Legion of the Lost from Thor #205. In order to raise him from the dead again, but as a powerful ally, Sinister has to kill all of Grigor’s descendants–and he’s working with Mikhail Rasputin to get it done!

In the end, Colossus and his brother Mikhail defeat Sinister but are the last remaining members of Grigor’s bloodline. But they let him live…

Then Mikhail goes to the Dark Zone dimension to atone for having helped Sinister in the first place.

Obviously, this is a canonically important book. It’s also well-written and drawn, despite being a Mister Sinister story (I don’t usually like those).
