WEB OF SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 (1985)

As far as Spider-Man books go, Web wasn’t bad. It was sometimes above average, sometimes below. But the early issues did give us a great gift: Charles Vess covers!

The interior art is not quite as good. Not terrible, not great.

The story, by Ann “Queen of the Weird” Nocenti, is about a disabled kid who builds his own armor suit. And then he is preyed on by a hood who claims to be able to get the kid a cure for his disability (from Mr. Fantastic no less). The hood really just wants to use the kid’s designs to make bad robots who then fight Spider-Man.

Mr. Fantastic refuses to help the kid.

Wow.

None of these characters will ever be seen again.
