Irredeemable Ant-Man #1 (2006)

Wait. This is a comic that tries to be funny and … Actually IS funny!

Let me begin this post by talking about the logo, because I love it.

I love how Ant-Man is basically a dumb and trivial character, so they put his name small with a huge shadow. I love that it calls him “unlikable.” It sets the tone for this character perfectly. I wish more books spent this much time and attention into their title art. Anyone know who at Marvel is responsible for it?

Storywise, the issue starts with a new looking Ant-Man saving a woman from a mugger and then asking her out.

Flashing back six months, we’re on a helicarrier watching some SHIELD agents play poker–and one of them is Eric O’Grady. O’Grady is frustrated with his life and job. He’s also kind of a bro-a**hat.

Hank Pym happens to be on the helicarrier working on his new, upgraded Ant-Man costume.

Eric steals it, assaulting Hank in the process, and then uses it to make his escape.

At the end of the issue, Eric shows up–in his plain-clothes–to his date with the mugging victim, and tells ehr his real name.

Great introduction and origin story. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes next.
