Written by the author of the book, “The Narrows” and drawn by the artist who created Animal Man, with inks by no less than Klaus Janson, I expected better from this fairly by-the-numbers tale of Damon Hellstrom fighting demons in New Orleans. Then again, it is a horror comic and those are rarely my cup of coffee.
Damon slays a bunch of demons haunting New Orleans and then goes to the Egyptian land of the dead as part of a battle for dominance between the Gods of Egypt. In the end, he realizes his own father is behind it all and spends the last half-dozen pages of issue #5 telling us what we just read because it’s all complicated. Here’s the deal. This is comics: If your big finish is basically just a text drop, you’ve not done a good job.
Anyway, it’s a MAX book that is entirely self-contained. No way to know for sure, but I don’t think it’s canon. Hard to tell because there are references to events that happened in Earth 616, like his romance with Patsy Walker, but without anything concrete to tie it to, it’s hard to tell for sure.
