HULK! #11-14 (1978-1979)

When this magazine started, the Hulk stories were a pretty good long-form story that reimagined some key events in Hulk history. For these issues, the running storyline involves a carnival and…It’s just not as good. It doesn’t tie to the established lore, doesn’t break new ground–it’s pretty much what you’d expect from his regular comic. They’re also in color, and the black-and-white art had set the magazine format apart. Now, it’s color.

Overall, it’s just not as interesting–and not really worth writing much about. The art is still good–by Ron Wilson. Overall, these are C-level stories.

On the other hand, the Moon Knight back-ups are terrific–solid B grades. Both halves of the book are written by Doug Moench, but Moon Knight is really his character. In issue #10-11, he stops a plot to steal a valuable statue of Horus.

The art, by Gene Colan, is appropriate for this character, who needs to be shadowy and mysterious. He’s on issues #11 and 12. But with #13…

It’s Bill Sienkiewicz. Finally. The best Moon Knight creative team is together: Doug and Bill.

If you don’t agree with my overall assessment of these issue, read this letter.

See? Kurt Busiek agrees with me.

If you’re wondering why I didn’t reproduce the letter page banner here, which I usually do, it’s because it’s just the word “Letters.” No creativity here.
