FANTASTIC FOUR #78-79: Thing No More (1968)

I can summarize this entire arc in just nine panels!

Guys.  If you create a guy made out of rocks who is in love with a woman who makes sculptures of rocks, there’s so much you can do with that.  Seriously.  All kinds of deep character moments.

Why do you keep drawing from the “Reed cure me/don’t cure me” well?

These two issues tell the same story we’ve read before, but they tell it much, much better.  But it’s almost too late: It’s a tired tale, already.

Still, this happens when Ben isn’t made of rocks anymore…

It’s the best telling of this story, but we’ve heard it so many times before, so it doesn’t rate higher than a B-.

  1. Maybe, but the cover of issue #78 is SO dramatic, that a framed and matted copy of it adorns the wall of my bedroom! One of the ten best ‘FF’ covers of all time! I’d say a “rock-solid” ‘B’!
