PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #4 (2007)

Small Wake for a Tall Man: Simply one of the best done-in-one Punisher stories of all time.

I’m a fan of Stilt-Man, so it pissed me off when Punisher killed him last issue. Still, this issue makes it all worth it. This is one of my favorite Punisher comics. I can’t believe I haven’t put it on a top 10 list.

At the Bar With No Name, the supervillain community assembles to mourn their friend. Among the assembled are some fairly big names: Eel, Rhino, Shocker, Chameleon, Absorbing Man…Even a Doombot!

Who knew he could draw such a crowd? I mean, he’s one of the oldest villains in Marvel canon, but he’s hardly a prolific success or anything.

Like Ennis, Fraction focuses on the villains.  But in this case, it’s Marvel Universe villains.

Also like Ennis’ Punisher books, Frank Castle lurks in the background while the criminals do their thing.

They end up in a bar-room brawl and Punisher blows the bar up.

I know this book is canon, but I don’t think any of these criminals actually die in the explosion–although as the reader we’re led to believe they did. I haven’t run down every single one, but the ones I spot-checked all had other appearances after this one.

Still, it’s a great read–continuity be damned.
