CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 (1989): 1st Powderkeg; new power set

Monica Rambeau lost her powers in Avengers #294, and was missing at the end of that story. This one-shot lets us know where she is. She’s the captain of a ship that gets hijacked by some powered goons including Powderkeg (above), in his first appearance. We learn that she was depowered, but not completely.

She can still manipulate energy, she just can’t turn into it.

Moonstone (the bad version) is also working for the baddies, so we get a girl-on-girl fight. Which we always do in comics starring a female. In fact, the big bad is a female inventor (that’s actually an uncommon character type) in a revamped Guardsman suit.

What the bad gal is after really doesn’t matter, but it is a fun ride. The whole point of this issue is to reintroduce and reboot Monica Rambeau.

Mr. Fantastic makes a cameo to help explain her new power set.
