FANTASTIC FOUR #166-167 (1976): Sue creates invisible objects

For Stan Lee or Roy Thomas, these would just be pretty good, but for Gerry Conway, these are A+ issues: Thing vs. Hulk. The FF are on a plane in the scene above, and Hulk accidentally destroys the wing.

This kind of casual, accidental destruction shows that it makes no sense for the world to continue to allow Hulk to live. He needs to be killed. We forget sometimes how much damage and death he causes incidental to his “nobody loves me” tantrums every issue.

After saving all the passengers, the team goes after Hulk. The actually capture him, and Reed forces him to transform to Bruce Banner (using science!) but then Ben breaks him out and he turns again.

Why does Thing do this? It doesn’t make a lot of sense. The Army promised that, once he turned into Banner, they’d let him go– but after he changes, they renege. Thing, having experienced anti-behemoth prejudice, doesn’t like that.

Like I said, it doesn’t make sense.

At the end, an unintended side effect of the Hulk-to-Banner cure is…

Thing is cured (again).

The covers to these issues are great.

Finally…

…Sue learns how to create tangible objects out of her invisible force shield.

This comic is one of the top 10 Thing/Hulk fights of all time.
