CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 (1998)

The last time we saw a Captain America #1 he looked like this:

This issue introduces him like this:

Phew. Ron Garney on art. Mark Waid choreographing Cap stopping someone from burning the American flag with a Liberty torch…This is Captain America.

He returns from the pocket dimension of Heroes Reborn by landing in Tokyo. He witnesses local protesters resisting the “Americanization” of Japan, but he is still confused about where’s he’s been for the past year (and, frankly, so are we–see the art above).

Lady Deathstrike is organizing the violent protesters, and we get our first Cap-vs-Yuriko fight. He defeats her, but she escapes while Cap disarms a bomb in a crowded movie theater.

The final panel has Kang watching the action, which signals a time-travel adventure. Definitely not my favorite kind of story, but I do trust Mark Waid.

(PS: SPOILER ALERT FOR A DECADES OLD COMIC: It’s really Korvac.)
