AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #277 (1986)

The first story in this issue is the aftermath from the revelation that Flash Thompson was unmasked as Hobgoblin—which we the readers know is not true.

There’s also a brief tie-in to Daredevil’s “Reborn” story—one of the best stories of all time.

And Spidey pranks Kingpin, which is good for a laugh.

But the real reason to read this is Charles Vess’ beautiful backup story (he both writes and draws it), in which Spider-Man, dressed in black, saves a girl who has been kidnapped during a snowstorm.

Tom DeFalco’s run on Amazing is not amazing. The art by Ron Frenz elevates it, but it still stands at an average run. Still, the shorter story is one of DeFalco’s better ones, and Charles Vess’ back-up is an A+. So I’m rounding to an A- for the entire issue.
