Captain America #326 (1987)

On Halloween, Captain America goes trick-or-treating at Red Skull’s house.

He is haunted by the ghosts of villains who he has either killed or failed to prevent from dying, like Scourge, MODOK and Porcupine.

Then, we see other dead people from Cap’s past—Bucky, Sharon, etc.  In the end, we learn the “ghosts” were created by Dr. Faustus in an effort to drive Cap nuts, but it turns out that Faustus drives himself crazy and is attacked by his own ghost of Red Skull.

Except…Was it a ghost? Red Skull’s “ghost” strangles Faustus, and at the end of the issue, Cap notices clawmarks around the Doctor’s throat…

Weird.

Plus there’s introspection:

It’s not a bad story, particularly for a done-in-one, but the constant hand-wringing in the pages of this comic is getting a little tedious.
