In issue #134, Daredevil meets Torpedo. He’s not very interesting. He’s suspected of a crime, but by the end of the issue, it’s Daredevil who is the fugitive, due to the machinations of Chameleon (who becomes a black man for the first time, I believe)…
…And Jester.
Issue #135 starts this Jester arc with three pages of newspaper articles. I’ve never seen anything like this before or since. Very cool. It allows Marv to comment on a bunch of topics.
I feel like the woman at the bottom, “Laura Lee Landers,” is supposed to be someone. She’s on a beach and the sailboat at her feet looks a little like a mermaid flipper, so manybe I’m thinking of this person…
…From Superman? Laura Lemaris? I’m counting this as a crossover, even if it’s just in my mind.
Anyway, it’s a typical hardcore Jester story. He’s a truly violent and scary villain.
I’m not as big a fan of his “murder mazes” because they feel too much like Arcade, but I do always enjoy these kinds of action sequences.
And at the very end, we learn Karen Page has been kidnapped–leading to the next story arc. We as readers know she’s with Ghost Rider now, so maybe a crossover is imminent?
Gerry Ford appears in person, not just in the newspaper. And Matt is still a ladies man.
Artist Bob Brown died of leukemia in January 1977, soon after this issue went on sale. John Buscema had to finish the story for him.
