Daredevil #265 (1989): Inferno

We’re back in Inferno New York, and Ann Nocenti may be the perfect writer for this kind of bizarre, horrifying and hilarious situation.

This issue starts with a dentist being attacked by his own equipment, and then becoming possessed by it.

He then kills a police officer and takes on his zombie identity.

I don’t think I mentioned in my summary of #263 that Karen Page finally decided to leave Daredevil.  In this issue, he’s sad about that and spends the entire issue without uttering a word.  Like here, where he fights the dentist…

The violence in this issue is over the top, and even the local kids who admire Daredevil unconditionally notice he’s different.

We have a blind hero who is now also mute, albeit due to emotion and choice.  He’s like the Terminator in T2: A silent force, bashing his way through the Inferno wasteland to reach his goal. And what is his goal?  Beer!

A nice touch: Kingpin is affected by the Inferno event.

And at the end of the issue, we see the city returning to normal and even the people at the bar can see DD has been through the ringer.

We also see Daredevil going to bar. Next issue is one of the best single-issue stories of all time, according to this objectively accurate list. It’s also one of the best Daredevil stories of all time.
