District X #7-12 (2004-2005): Underground

This continues to be a solid cop series. This arc weaves together two stories. One involves a mutant who looks like a gross worm named Winston Hobbes who lives in the sewers under the city. To survive, he became a c.h.u.d. Remember that old movie, C.H.U.D.? It stood for cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller.

Hobbes was abandoned by his own parents and seeks revenge during this story. Bishop and Ortega, his civilian police officer partner, stop him.

The other story involves the attempted murder of Mr. M, the guy who blew up mutant town in the last arc. Where the Hobbes story is a horror/X-Files type cop tale, this one is more of an investigative policy procedural. The two stories provide great balance.

A third plotline is introduced in issue #7 but not developed. A woman kills a mutant on the docks.

We’ll learn later that she is Sashenka Popova, and she works for Colonel Vazhin–the Russian equivalent of Nick Fury.

I really expected to dislike this book. It has defied all of my expectations.
