SCARLET WITCH BY JOHN BYRNE (1980)

  1. The “beauty”, no pun intended, of John Byrne’s ability to render beautiful women like Storm and the Scarlet Witch, here, is his ability to perfectly capture the most minute nuances of the female frame, including it’s imperfections. Study Witchie-Poo’s lower torso, here- it’s beautiful, of course, but we can still see slight evidence of Wanda’s taste for Crepes Suzette! Compare this picture with any of Wanda drawn by, say, ( the awesome ) Sal Buscema. Our Pal Sal drew Wanda most lusciously, of course, during his legendary tenure on ‘The Avengers’, ( also see ‘Marvel Team-Up’s #41-44 ) but he gallantly deletes the luscious little areas of “belly-pooch” which Byrne- the undisputed Master of Funnybook Art-treats us to here! I say, there is room for BOTH interpretations of Miss Wanda’s classy chassis! ( actually, Byrne shares the title of “The Master of Funnybook Art” with the late, great Neal Adams- I would have hated myself if I had not signed off without making that clarification!! ) Have a very superheroine-sexy day!!
