MOON KNIGHT: FIST OF KHONSHU #1-6 (1985)

This series should have been called: HOW TO TURN A CHARACTER FROM COOL TO CORNY IN JUST SIX ISSUES.

One of the things that made Doug Moench’s character so interesting was that we never knew if he truly was connected to the Egyptian God Khonshu. Was he resurrected? Is he delusional? Does that delusion empower him?

Gone is any subtlety or room for doubt.  In this origin retcon from issue #1, Spector is clearly dead and Khonshu is clearly not just a voice in the character’s head….Moon Knight has moon-super-powers!

He can bend steel bars! If we weren’t clear enough about the godly intervention, we get told AGAIN in scripted comments across the art.

Not only is Moon Knight’s personality made less interesting, his costume is revised, too. It isn’t just all white, it’s got gold flourish.

It’s the Donald Trump version of Moon Knight. The costume alterations are delivered by the priests of Khonshu.

Marc thought he had retired, but he’s visited in his sleep.

He’s tormented by the God now, rather than feeling blessed by it.

Sigh.

He also has new weapons.

Despite all of this, I’m left asking this question…

Why? Why were these huge alterations needed? I mean, I think I know the answer, which is that they were NOT needed.

The reason he’s brought back from retirement is to help Khonshu defeat Morpheus. He also fights a guy who dresses like the pirate Bluebeard.

This is not good comics. It’s cancelled after six issues.
