Dark Reign: Hawkeye #1-5 (2009)

Hawkeye is now Ronin because Echo who was Ronin has been missing since the Secret Invasion, and Bullseye is now Hawkeye as part of Norman Osborn’s replacement Avengers who are called the Dark Avengers in the title of their series but just called “Avengers” by Osborn, while the actual Avengers are now called the New Avengers in the title of their series but are just called “Avengers” when referred to by the members themselves.

Meanwhile, the Thunderbolts, who as individuals have usually taken on the roles of existing heroes, are still called the Thunderbolts and also work for Osborn but some of them are now part of his Dark Avengers and Bullseye, who is now Hawkeye, is one of them.

Got it?

This miniseries is about Dark Hawkeye (Bullseye).

BullsHawk proves very hard for Norman Osborn to control, and much of this series has them pushing against each other while HawkBull does all kinds of nasty, violent, and horrible things.

He kills all kinds of people in various ways while Osborn tries to stop Ben Urich from reporting on how deranged Hawkbullseye is.

Eventually, we get a plot: Bullseye’s father is back, is now a terrorist known as Kingmaker, and is messing with his son.  And so is Solo, who was hired by Osborn to kill-and-replace Bullseye as Hawkeye.  Hawkeye blows his father up and watches him burn to death.

For issue #5 a new artist is brought in and main writer Andy Diggle shares script credit with Antony Johnston.  Nothing in this book was bad, but nothing was all that good either, and the creative changes for the big finale served only to take all the air out of this story.
