X-Men #188-193 (2006): Supernovas; Mike Carey run begins

This arc introduces the “Children of the Vault,” who will be around for a while.  They want to kill both mutants AND humans, and then rule the world.  So another Tuesday for the X-Men, really.

I’m tagging them as a group because I’m too lazy to figure out all their names.

They start by chasing down (and failing to capture) Sabretooth, and then kidnap Northstar and Aurora.  The Alpha Flight siblings are being held by SHIELD, and the Children of the Vault destroy the SHIELD facility, kill the agents/staff, and make it appear that the X-Men were responsible.

After kidnapping them, the Children of the Vault are able to alter Aurora and NorthStar, giving them extra powers like a heat blast when the two characters touch.

Meanwhile, Sabretooth seeks help from the X-Men.  The Children of the Vault track him to the X-Mansion and send the newly enhanced twins to kill him.

The heat power appears to kill Iceman, but apparently now he has the power to re-form when he’s melted.

The X-Men beat Northstar and Aurora thanks in large part to the appearance of Cable.

Cable knows who they are.  He explains that they were created in a lab and put through 6,000 years of human evolution–so apparently all of us have powers 600 Centuries from now.  The process took place on a special craft called The Conquistador.  Sabretooth also reveals that the reason the CotV are so upset with him is that he was hired to kill the scientist who created them.

The Children then attack en masse.  The X-Men are able to kill a few of them, with the help of the Sentinel Squad that keeps watch over them, but some of the Children get away.  The X-Men are able to take their Conquistador vehicle, however.

In the aftermath, the surviving CotV swear they’ll get revenge and Rogue’s team of X-Men decide to move out of the mansion.
