Wolverine #62-65 (2008): Get Mystique

This the first collaboration between Jason Aaron and Ron Garney, who will become a Wolverine dream team.  The story reads a bit like one of Mark Millar’s big action epics but…There’s really nothing wrong with that.

Cyclops decides Wolverine needs to “get Mystique” for her betrayal of the mutants during Messiah Complex.  And it’s a kill mission.

What follows is a chase story around the globe. Which is fun.

The story is told with flashbacks to a story about how they both met for the first time in 1921, where they both escaped a Mexican firing squad.

Mystique had formed a gang of gamblers and criminals, and the local militia didn’t love that.  Wolverine didn’t like being implicated in their shenanigans, and went after Mystique back then, too.

I didn’t realize Mystique was an immortal, but I guess being able to shapeshift it makes sense that she could simply shift-away her aging process.

In the end, Wolverine stabs her and leaves her to die in the desert.

But of course she’s not going to die.  Logan should know better than to just leave her without finishing her off.
