THOR #304 (1981)

This story starts with Thor doing some rare “street work,” saving a woman who is about to get hit by a car.  Then, pages later, The Wrecking Crew escape from prison and kill her (albeit by accident).

This coincidence leads Thor to them, and he beats their asses. He defeats Wrecking by short-circuiting him.

This is a one-off power set.

As Donald Blake, he’s rebuilding his practice.

Keith Pollard is definitely not my favorite Thor artist, but he’s not bad.

  1. After two-to-three years of Roy Thomas’ tedious “Siegfried” multi-year epic, this stand-alone, Earth-bound “Thor Versus the Wrecking Crew” adventure was a breath of fresh air. That aforementioned tedious “Siegfried” in 1979 was my first indication that “Rascally” Roy Thomas was running out of gas. Writing Donald Blake totally out of the storyline a few years later in 1983 was an EGREGIOUS mistake, as the Good Doctor brought a badly-needed element of humanity to the otherwise grandiose proceedings. I understand that Dr. Blake still haunts the ‘Thor’ storyline in an ephemeral capacity today, but nothing like he did when Lee wrote it in the Sixties. Having an “instant doctor” on the Avengers was pretty cool ( and convenient ) too.
