Punisher vs Bullseye #1-5 (2006)

This series is written by Daniel Way. That may be all you need to know, but in case you need more, it pits two of Marvel’s most sociopathetic and violent characters against each other but plays for comedy. Sometimes the jokes land.

More often they don’t.

There are a bunch of problems here, not the least of which is that “Welcome Back Frank,” one of a handful of series that marked the beginning of the reboot of Marvel after the 1990s, already played the character with the ultra-violent, comedic approach and Daniel Way is no Garth Ennis. Second, a mob family puts out a contract on Punisher and they’re only paying $10,000. Ridiculous. Third, Bullseye is willing to work for that amount. Even more ridiculous.

Once you get past that premise, this is fine if you’re into cartoonish, satirical violence. But at the same time, again, if that’s your thing then you could just read pretty much anything written by Garth Ennis and have a more enjoyable afternoon.

Steve Dillon’s art is more than a little redemptive, too. But then, once again and for the last time, if you decide to read a Garth Ennis comic instead, he’s worked with Dillon quite a bit. And not just on Welcome Back Frank. They did Marvel Knights Punisher and Punisher War Zone, too. And check out Preacher for probably the best collaboration by this team.

(They also worked together on Hellblazer, but that’s not a book notable for truly over-the-top violence. Also, while I recognize that many people love it, it just never worked for me so I can’t recommend it.)
