INCREDIBLE HULK ANNUAL #10 (1981)

I love Rick Leonardi’s style. He’s the artist on this one-off annual tale of Bruce Banner becoming Captain Universe. The cosmic power of Captain Universe separates the two into separate beings.

It’s an early example of this narrative device, and I’m generally not fond of it. Banner and Hulk being tied together, each a part of the other’s psyche, is the entire point of the Hulk character. If they can exist separately, it means that Hulk is not the rage of emotion but an actual entity–which means he’s like all the other “rage and punch” superheroes out there.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure this is the first time this happened, which makes this a significant issue, even though it doesn’t have lasting impact.
