Daredevil #56-60 (2004): The King of Hell’s Kitchen

At the start of this arc, we learn that Matt won his lawsuit against the tabloid rag that outed him as Daredevil, even though most everyone believes the story was true and despite the fact that he recently unmasked and told all the criminals in Hell’s Kitchen that he was the new kingpin of crime.

Turns out, they’re all too afraid of him to admit they saw him unmask. And the public adores him–he’s even asked if he wants to run for Mayor of NYC.

As a result of him telling all the criminals to get out of Hell’s Kitchen, crime has now spread other neighborhoods. Some of his superhero friends try an intervention.

I didn’t realize Spider-Man was cool with Cage and Richards knowing his identity.

And neither was Matt.

This is so weird. If he has been able to stop crime in Hell’s Kitchen, then the answer should be for everyone else to step their game up in other neighborhoods–not get him to stop being so hardcore and effective.

Anyway, the Yakuza are also angry about it so they go after him and his blind wife Milla. She runs away, and then we learn that much of this arc has been Ben Urich and Milla talking, it’s a year after all these events, and Milla wants Matt back in her life.

Matt/Daredevil is missing…Ben tracks him to Night Nurse’s underground hospital.

The Yakuza beat him up. Daredevil gets some of those same “friends” who told him to stop being such a powerful crimefighter to help him and they rout the Yakuza once again.

Milla, now realizing that Matt really is Daredevil for sure and that she will never be more important to him than his crimefighting life, so she dumps him.

Frankly, Mary Jane might learn a few things here.

Note also that Foggy Nelson spent some time in hiding with her, while they waited for the defeat of the Yakuza, and he told her about Karen Page so…He kinda cockblocked Matt here.
