Avengers Initiative: Reptil One Shot (2009): Reptil quits Initiative

Reptil is failing in Initiative school.

He’s also having doubts about staying.

Then there’s an alert about Stegron. Stegron has his own little dino army, and he’s attacking SHIELD bases.

Having Reptil go up against him makes total sense.  Unfortunately, he loses the battle.

Stegron has never been a badass before. All the elements of badassery were there (fangs, armored body, looks like a monster), but he was kind of a joke.  He usually fought Spider-Man, too, and Spidey’s wiseass taunts didn’t help Stegron’s image.

After losing the battle, Tigra has to convince Reptil not to quit the team.  They have a rematch, and win.  But that’s not all.  We learn that Stegron was actually a hero here: He was attacking SHIELD bases in an effort find Moonboy, who was being held captive, so that he could free him to be with Devil Dinosaur.  Moonboy was captured way back in Heroes for Hire, and this story picks up that thread.

In the end, Ka-Zar shows up and Reptyl decides to go with the whole group to the Savage Land.  Once there, Ka-Zar offers to help find Reptyl’s parents, who were lost in the Savage Land.  Tigra covers for the disappearance of Moonboy by telling SHIELD that he was eaten by one of Stegron’s dinosaurs.

Not sure if this ever gets a follow-up, but it would be nice idea for a Ka-Zar miniseries.  We haven’t really seen him buddy up with a kid before, taking on a mentor-like role.
