For some of these issues, Astonishing Tales becomes a solo Ka-Zar joint. Is that a good thing? No, not really. The character is extremely hard to write, to be fair. Like Ghost Rider, he’s high concept–only the Ka-Zar concept is highly derivative. But it does allow readers to see Zabu fighting a seamonster. So, there’s that.
Some of the issues, like #9, are half-original/half-reprint.
Substantively, these issues tell a couple tales that are unimportant but for the fact that they introduce Bobbi Morse–the future Mockingbird–who is really just another woman who needs to be rescued. She’s not named yet–but that will come with issue #12.
We also learn about Animetal, which is a relative alloy of vibranium. Not sure it ever really amounts to much though.
The writing doesn’t even match the facial expressions. These are simply bad comics.
Next issue, Bobbi Morse gets her name and a new character is introduced into the color Marvel Universe, coming from the black-and-white Savage Tales series.
Who is it? You’ll see.
