Last story, some of Peter’s Spider-Man gear had fallen into the wrong hands, and now someone is leaving spider-tracers at homicide crime scenes. That’s still going on, but now the staff at the Daily Bugle have also been hearing about a new goblin-style villain on the streets, but nobody has pictures yet.
Jackpot is on the trail of this new “Gray Goblin” as well, and Spider-Man crosses paths with her for the first time.
The two have some passably witty banter where we’re reminded that we’re supposed to think Jackpot is really Mary Jane but…We don’t really think that, do we?
The Blue Shield shows up while Spidey and Jackpot are hunting the new villain and tries to arrest Spider-Man for failing to register as a superhuman.
I like that they’re going old school here, having notes from the Editor to the reader to help make sure we know who the various characters are.
The new goblin villain shows up during Blue Shield’s intervention, and Spider-Man learns that the character’s name is Menace.
Jackpot and Spidey team-up to try to stop Menace from killing a Councilwoman who is running for Mayor, but she is killed during their botched rescue attempt. That’s not going to be a good thing, I’m sure.
Spider-Man and Jackpot separately leave the scene after Menace escapes. Spidey then tries to track Jackpot to the home of the woman she claimed was her secret identity, but the person he finds there denies being Jackpot.
And that’s it for this creative crew. The way this title is being managed now is as a 3xMonthly with rotating creative teams. We’ll have to wait for Guggenheim and Larroca’s next turn to follow up on this storyline.
