MY FAVORITE COMICS OF 2019

BEST D.C. BOOKS OF 2019

Green Lantern by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp.  This should have been a lot better than it was, but even mediocre Grant Morrison is better than most writers on their best days, and I’m curious to see where the new series, Green Lantern: Blackstars is going.

The Wild Storm by Warren Ellis and Jon Davis Hunt.  I really liked  this 24-issue story, but it never seemed to catch fire the way everyone expected.  It concluded this year, so I’m sure you can get the whole thing in trade now.

American Carnage by Bryan Hill and Leandro Fernandez (Vertigo).  A violent book about White Supremacy that neither oversimplifies the topic nor uses sentimentality to dumb down the consequences of institutionalized, politicized race wars.

Lois Lane by Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins.  It ain’t over yet, but this miniseries has a very “Gotham Central” vibe set side by side with sweet characterizations of Lane’s relationship with Superman.  Home run.

Batman by Tom King with Mikel Janin, Travis Moore, Mitch Gerads, Guillem March, Jorge Fornes, Lee Weeks, Amanda Conner, Dan Panosian, Yanick Paquette, Tony S. Daniel, Clay Mann, John Romita Jr.  Bruce Wayne worked out his daddy issues in 2019, during one long Bane story in which he fought just about every villain he’s ever faced–complete with a Joker head-in-a-box.
