Mystique disguises herself as a new mutant in order to infiltrate the X-Men and mess with Rogue and Gambit’s romance, so that Mystique herself could have a better relationship with Rogue, her foster daughter. And one of her tactics was to become Rogue and bang Gambit. Then, Mystique planned to introduce Rogue to a man named Augustus Madison, who we only see glimpses of in this story, because Mystique thinks he’s better for Rogue.
At least, it seems like they had sex–but the author, wisely, never reveals the truth about it. Still, that’s some seriously misguided stuff right there.
She does this by infiltrating Gambit’s new squad of mutants, who are universally lame. He’s also a really bad (and mean!) teacher, so they revolt.
From left, that’s Rain Boy, Flubber, and Onyxx. The final member of Gambit’s students is Bling! She doesn’t like how “Foxx” is behaving.
As part of her undercover infiltration of Gambit’s team, Mystique (as Foxx) sexually manipulates Onyxx, who falls in love with her until she beats the crap out of him with a toilet.
Oof.
Eventually, Emma Frost figures out that Foxx is really Mystique and the X-Men capture her…
And she says she wants to be on the team.
Now, wait for this…The X-Men then decide that she should be a member of the team. She infiltrated them, broke up a long-standing relationship, and put a new member into a coma so…They vote to let her join.
This story is a bit of a swing-and-a-miss. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great–and it’s got a pretty heavy “ick” factor in terms of Mystique’s motives and a strong WTF!?! factor when the X-Men vote to put her on the team.
You’re a few issues from Mike Carey and its gonna be awesome. Hang in there
