Warlock #1-4 (2004)

This miniseries is cool for a bunch of reasons.  First, it’s one of Greg Pak’s first scripts for Marvel, and we will go on to do wonderful and important things—mostly with Hulk.  Second, the art is by the great Charlie Adlard.

A woman is hired to write a movie about Adam Warlock but, it turns out, the “movie” is actually just a plot by the enclave to get her to design Warlock 2.0, which they then create and test.  New Warlock turns out to be a killer, and (what I think is the 616 Warlock) shows up at the end…

The story gets heady here, with discussions about the moral responsibility of someone who allows a killer to kill, and what if that killer is God…It’s the kind of cosmic story that Jim Starlin writes for Marvel.

I highly recommend reading this.  However, I’m pretty sure none of this happens in Earth 616.  I think the Enclave may be the 616 Enclave, who tested their new Warlock out in this alternate reality?  I dunno.  In the end, the screen writer becomes a third Warlock—and that’s definitely not in the 616.

If you’re looking for clear continuity, this is not the book for you.  If you just want a very cool story that plays with the ideas behind the character of Adam Warlock, this is a great read.
