Thor: Blood Oath #1-6 (2005)

Issue #1 of this series starts like this:

And the battle with Absorbing Man ends like this:

Yes.  That did feel good.  What an excellent start.

From there, we essentially get a “Tales of Asgard” story told in a modern style.  Remember “Tales of Asgard?”  That was the title of the old Kirby/Lee back-up tales from Journey to Mystery. If you remember how “random” those old comics could be, this one is just like that. It’s just nonstop fun and action.

Thor goes back to Asgard and finds that the Warriors Three on trial for killing (by accident) a giant.  Their sentence: Find some magic items and bring them back to the giant’s family.

The subsequent adventure is full of pulpy mythology stuff, has a “quest for magical items,” comes with excellent art and better-than-average writing, and there is an entire issue dedicated to Thor and Hercules fighting.

In other words: There is absolutely no reason you shouldn’t hunt this down and read it yourself.  It’s what comics are all about.  Especially if you love the early days of Marvel.  And if you don’t, you just don’t like comics.
