Captain Universe #1-5 (2006)

In January 2006, Marvel put out a series of Captain Universe issues, published weekly, with each issue having a different titular hero and a different artist. Jay Faerber wrote the whole thing.

It started with Hulk. The Uni-Power, which operates by occupying peoples’ bodies and imbuing them with awesome power. And, in Hulk’s case, turning him blue. This is the first appearance of a blue version of Hulk.

Uni-Power is having some issues that include diminished power, and he bonds with Hulk specifically to access Bruce Banner, hoping the scientist will be able to help Uni-Power track down an AIM scientist who is apparently the world’s expert on the Uni-Power. But things don’t go well, the scientist is killed, and Banner is arrested and charged with murder. So he needs a lawyer which means…

Daredevil is the next headliner. As Captain Universe, he gets his sight back. (Beyonder already did this form him in Secret Wars II.)

It also overloads his powers. (Frank Miller already did this, too, and pretty much did the very same way.)

Hm.

Uni-Power then jumps to X-23, who teams up with the new Scorpion to continue the effort to get the information AIM has on Captain Universe. They’re getting close but the search is interrupted by the Shi’Ar empire who show up and try to get the Fantastic Four to help them take over the Uni-Power.

In the course of that issue, both Susan Richards and Gladiator get the power, which leads them to agree that having the Uni-Power is “cool.”

Silver Surfer is the final starring character, but by this point the series has gotten a little tiresome and overly complicated. Norrin helps the Uni-Power find a more permanent human host, who will be a part of the upcoming Annihilation event.
