Introducing the work of…Walt Simonson!
He’s not yet the mature and brilliant artist of his run in the 1980s, which introduced machine-gun Executioner, frog Thor, and Beta Ray Bill, but there’s elements of his future here. In particular, his love of big sound effects, and big layouts.
Thor and The Warriors Three fly through space on a viking looking for Odin. When they finally find him, they save him. They get help from a Rigellan Recorder.
It’s a big epic with oversized villains and lots of Kirbyish art. Very interesting, but I can’t help comparing it to Simonson’s later work-which would play with similar themes, only would do it much better. When they finally get big daddy Odin back to Asgard, Loki is waiting for them. He’s taken over Asgard.
