The team gets their own series and faces off against mind-controller Despero and guess what? Snapper Carr is the one who wins the day.
I have to wonder if kids reading this comic wanted to be Snapper Carr. I bet they still wanted to be Batman or Superman.
Not sure why the DC folks thought it was necessary to insert a hipster teen into the group, but The Avengers did the same thing with Rick Jones.
Re: Snapper Carr. It was the era of cute side-kicks saving the day, at least on the Superman / Batman side of DC. After all, going ‘wholesome’ was how Supes and Bats survived the Comics Code pogroms. Snapper was better than Streaky, Bat-Hound, or Zook. Stan and Jack were just starting to hit their stride over at Marvel on FF and Spidey, which would change the whole contextual dynamic for comics and eventually cause/allow DC to grow up some. And most kids (or at least one of the them) wanted to be Green Lantern, who had a cool secret identity (test pilot!) and a great toy!
yeah, but it wasn’t quite the end….The superfriends TV show had Wendy and what’s-his-name, who wisely were replaced later by the Wonder Twins.
Thanks for the comment!
