X-23: Innocence Lost (2005)

X-23 has appeared several times already but doesn’t have an official origin story yet. This is that. While it’s true that you don’t really need to read it to know what’s going to happen (it is pretty by-the-numbers as far as origins go), it’s executed well and is a solid read.

A scientist named Dr. Sarah Kinney is part of a privately funded version of the Weapon X program. They try to clone Wolverine, but the tests keep going wrong until they create a female clone. Actually, it fails until Dr. Kinney makes her 23rd clone, and that becomes X-23.

She then gets ninja training (and goes bezerker and kills the ninja), and gets programmed to kill.

Slaughter, is more like it.

At the end of the miniseries, her handlers trick her into killing her own mother.

Like I said, most of this is fairly predictable but there are enough twists to keep it interesting, and I like the “little girl psycho killer” concept.
