Sensational Spider-Man #23-27 (2006)

A two-page cover announces that Marvel Knights: Spider-Man is over and is being replaced by this title.

What?!?  They missed a chance to publish an issue numbered “#1”?!?  That would never happen today!

Sadly, the story itself doesn’t warrant the hype.  It’s another Lizard story, with a brief Vulture story built in and a ghastly story about Mary Jane.

The Lizard story has all the familiar beats: Billy Connors is near death.  Lizard/Dr. Connors has noble motives but a bad way of executing on them.  Vermin partners with him. Both of them struggling to contain their animal sides.  So does Black Cat (who shouldn’t even be part animal), Spider-Man, Puma, John “Man Wolf” Jameson, and Mary Jane(!?)

Yes, Puma is in this.  Puma never makes a story better.

Turns out it was all Stegron’s fault.

Exactly.  All this didn’t matter.

Note that Spider-Man still has his new power set (including organic webbing), in case that makes this a better (or worse) story for you.  Even so, this is the story that (ugh!) gives Peter a suit of Stark-designed armor…

There is nothing I like about this.  And when, in-story, Madame Web predicts it’s going to get worse, I believe her.
