Art by Bill Sienkiewicz.
Rest in Peace to one of comics’ most influential creators. He wrote the first African American superhero for a DC comic (an issue of Teen Titans that never made it to publication), but also created diverse characters like Storm, Thunderbird, and Brother Voodoo; international characters like Nightcrawler, Colossus, and the living island Krakoa; and dozens of other characters, many of which are now movie and television stars, like, Swamp Thing, Her (Kismet), The Orb, Constrictor, Human Target, Hulk’s love Jarella, Libra, and a little character called Wolverine. He rebooted the X-Men, Phantom Rider, Blue Beetle, The Freedom Fighters, and Wonder Woman. He had renowned runs on Justice League, Marvel Team-Up, The Defenders, and Phantom Stranger. He launched terrific series like Untold Legends of Batman and Tales of the Green Lantern Corps. He served as a writer and an editor, and was known for his generosity and kindness towards new creators.
He passed away on September 10, 2017.
